Bremerhaven, Germany

In late 1969 I received orders from the Navy to report to the Phillipines and since I had no desire to get anywhere near Vietnam I agreed to re-enlist for 6 years if I could pick my next duty station. They agreed and I chose between London and Germany.
There were no openings in London so I was sent to Bremerhaven, Germany to do my job in the intelligence gathering group. When I got married to my ex-wife she had never had sex, had never tried pizza, never been on a train or plane (damn near squeezed my hand off) or been out of the USA.
We arrived in Frankfurt, Germany (once west Germany) on her birthday of Dec.6 and then spent the entire night on a train heading for the port city of Bremerhaven. It's the port for all materials heading into the European theatre run by MSCELM (military sealift command easter atlantic and med)...catchy title! Our sponsor (don't remember his name) met us at the station and showed us to our new home in the American off-site housing.
We settled in for a 3 year tour of duty in this exciting place new to both of us. I enjoyed playing the sports offered including flag football and golf plus bowling. My wife got to go to Berlin and see the Berlin Wall which she borrowed a peice of it as a relic to cherish forever but I was not allowed to do this journey since at that time Berlin was in east Germany controlled by the Russians.
My ex-wife and I split up on a legal separation after a year and I moved on-base as she returned to the States. I started hanging with the guys I worked with and took trips to Amsterdam and Hamburg, Germany. Talking about "wild" places....whew! Amsterdam has canal streets with hookers in every window and Hamburg has brothels located on the main road leading through the city. Being a young guy from Tennessee I had never seen this stuff before!
On one trip to Amsterdam I paid for a hooker to go with my friend to her bed and fuck his brains out since he was still a virgin! Heck, at that time it only cost the equal to $7.50 so I didn't mind. I had received a VRB (variable re-enlitment bonus) of $10,000 and I had bought a new car with some of that which was our transportation on our trips.
My sponsor's wife (Michelle) and I became close friends. She was of French-Moroccoan blood and very attractive! She offered me an extra "good treat" on one Halloween but I didn't take her up on it since I was a "faithful" husband much to my dismay. It turned out that a lot of the military wives there were having flings with guys while their husbands were working the shift work that we did.
The locals were actually friendly to us Americans and I did meet a few. I think that Gen. Patton had taken the city in WW2 with his Third Army because of the military base having pictures of him on the walls.
I stayed there until late 1972 when we closed down operations at that base. I orginally had orders to report to Morocco but wound up trading those orders with my sponsor and went to WASHDC to report to the headquarters for the NSG (naval security group). I received a MUC (meritorious unit commendation) for my service in Bremerhaven. I still remember how good the food was as does my ex. We even talk about it as if it was yesterday!
