Friends from years before--friends forever more--met Ahna Maria Dubai on New Year's Eve at Noir's at the Charles Hotel for Happy Hour.
Later they took the elevator up to the tenth floor for dinner and dancing at the world renowned Regattabar Jazz Club where at least once every holiday season, Robert's band had played for the last ten years. It wasn't possible, but she could have sworn she saw and heard him on stage, singing and playing his horn as in years past.
The resemblance was remarkable. The leader of the band even looked like Robert from a distance--moved like him--for once, she liked being near sighted to preserve the illusion.
As done from the early 1700's in Harvard Square, at midnight, the crowd sang Auld Lang Syne.
After all the hugs and kisses were done, and noise makers quieted, Ahana walked over to the long windows and looked down to watch commuters with gifts stacked high scurrying into the Red Line MBTA Station to catch the last train out.
She wondered if they would all make it home alive. Didn't really care if she did or not.
************
The Harvard Coop like most stores had closed, only a few window shoppers remained, mostly lovers playing kissy face as they walked past the homeless sleeping in doorways.
"What a wonderful, wonderful night," she'd cried, spinning around and around before she sank exhausted onto a vacated park bench and pulled Robert down by her side.
With her feet upon his lap all stretched out on the bench, they listened to strolling Madrigals singing their final set for the night.
"It's a grand night," to be sure," he sighed, but the new day is upon us, with a fat goose arriving from Farmer Flanagin, if we don't get home--we're going to be too tired to cook tomorrow let alone entertain--it's nearly 2 A.M. Let's leave and get some rest my darling."
Grabbing his hand she told him, "Don't be an old stick-the-mud. Dance one last dance with me before we go home."
******************
They cut through the Charles Lobby out to the back brick covered plaza behind the Charles Hotel where they circled the fountain with the water glittering like jewels from multi-colored Christmas lights silently whispering beneath the merry driving rhythms of their flashing boots against crystals of ice forming on mistletoe bushes in fancy planters.
"You're energy never ceases to amaze me my darling," he shouted to her over the din of all the cars honking their horns to welcome in the New Year.
Putting his hands around her waist, he lifted her high above his head, then turned, turned, and turned while their feet skipped to the beat of "Jingle Bells Rock" blaring from the speakers implanted in the street lights.
Stretching her arms wide, she lifted her face to the moon, turning and turning in the fountains silver mist, until Robert collapsed in her arms and down to the bricks on top of her where they smooched in the snow bank.
Pedestrians strolled by them on the Charles River Walk-way--smiled and looked away, hotel guests they presumed--Ahana and Robert couldn't have cared less. They were lost in their own world.
"Your beautiful, Ahana," he told her drawing her closer and helping her to kneel in the snow and straddle his lap, "Every bit of you." Cupping her at the juncture of her thighs, he stroked softly between her legs as he kissed her neck and whispered in her ear, "Especially here."
Hearing the rasp of his zipper, within seconds she found he had his hand on his erection and was pushing her down further with the other one. She moaned as she felt his thickness all smooth and hard and hot, enter her warmth like a thermal glove.
She was ready for him, totally wet with arousal, no way was she going to draw back now. Placing her hands on the sides of his neck, she lowered herself until she was seated to the hilt, to the top of his shaft.
Lust ripped through her body, from the top of her head to her toes as she squeezed her muscles around every solid inch of him and wouldn't let him go.
It had been far too long since they'd made love. Despite the cold snow, she was determined to make it last and so was he.
His slow thrusts did not let up--she continued to move with him--felt like she could last forever. Every ounce of her body, mind and soul focused where they were joined--where she chased his thick cock thrust after thrust.
"That's right," he growled, "Come after me, chase it baby, chase my cock."
His words triggered her and caused her body to tense, arch and there was no stopping it--she hit her peak, climaxed, and her body took over completely.
It shook her and she squeezed him tight while he plunged harder and and deeper, as sensations rolled through her until at last a loud animal growl tore from his chest.
Driving into her one last time, he collapsed and was still. A siren wailed in the distance. Every place their skin stuck together and the nearly frozen sweat slid down their foreheads refreshing them.
A smile came to the corners of his lips when he heard her purr, "That was amazing darling."
"No, baby," he whispered pausing to plant a kiss on her chest, "You are the one who is amazing."
Unwrapping her leg from his waist, he grasped her thigh, stopped her.
"Ahana, do you have someplace you need to be?"
"No my darling, no place without you."
"Then why don't you stay right here with me and me with you, why do we need to move?"
"Because my darling, we will freeze our ass off, and that is no way to bring in the New Year."
Out of the shadows a undercover cop appeared.
"You kids better get out of here. There's another a bomb threat and everyone's being evacuated from the area."
******************
Deciding to get completely out of the area they walked quickly up Church Street towards Brattle and were half way home when they were mugged by two thugs as they walked past the Unitarian Church Cemetery.
Robert resisted, was shot and dragged into a nearby car and never seen again.
It was witnessed by two street people on their way to the CVS Pharmacy who stayed with Ahana until the cops arrived.
A month later she was told, that the police had learned her husband was mostly likely shot by mob members--a case of mistaken identity--that her spouse was a near double of a CIA agent that had recently relocated to Boston.
*************
Ahana had a rough time dealing with it all--it was all she could do to go through the motions--existing in a state of numbness one day at a time.
Every unexpected sound she heard, she went into a panic attack and soon became afraid to leave her home.
Agoraphobia, "fear of the market place," was what her doctor said she had. That and a conditioned response to the mugging.
Despondent, she doubted she'd ever be happy again and finally, she abandoned all hope of ever again seeing Robert alive.
Once enough evidence turned up, he was declared dead.
Friends tried to encourage her to get out, think about dating, but the thought appalled her.
She told her best friend, "Look, I know you mean well, but I want to simply carry on my husband's work. I don't want to date, and besides, no man on the face of this earth could ever take Robert's place."
*************
Looking down upon it all, she longed to turn the clock back a year. If she had to do it all over again, she would beg Robert to take refuge inside the Charles Hotel, not walk home as they did that fateful night.
Robert would have done anything she asked, she told herself that she could've talked him into it and continually berated herself for not insisting they take shelter in the hotel once the bomb threat was issued.
************
Now a year later standing on the tenth floor in the Regatta Bar with her back to the dwindling crowd, she continued to look out the floor to ceiling windows when she felt arms go around her waist.
Spinning around she expected to find a friend, but instead, there stood Robert.
She screamed but no sound came out. Her knees went weak and she fainted in his arms.
Carrying her to a nearby overstuffed chair he asked people close to them to leave them alone as he dipped a cloth napkin in a glass of water and held it to her head to revive her.
"Robert, Robert, how can this be, you died . . . you died . . ."
"No darling, I am here, I will tell you all about it, but all you need to know right now is that I am alive and home for good."
Happiness was mixed with anger, "How can this be--how can you be here--how can something like this happen?"
She said it over and over as she felt his arms and his face as if to test if he was real.
When Robert said he had a suite in the hotel for them, that they would be staying, she smiled weakly and nodded her head. It was good to have him by her side, to take charge.
As he put his coat around her, their friend John, a Unitarian Minister, approached them from a nearby table. He was followed by his wife Julie-- Robert's sister, a psychiatrist.
She held Ahana's hand and reassured her, that all was well.
"You're telling me that everything is okay? Then WHAT DID happen?
Ahana took a deep breath and and shot both Julie and Robert a penetrating look of disbelief.
Convinced that her friend and sister-in-law was in a state of shock, Julie put her arms around her and tried to explain. At least to the extent she thought Ahana could handle it.
"It's a long story, but keeping him in protective custody had to be done to protect you and others. For now, just trust me, none of us knew any of this until two days ago. We didn't know how to break it to you and neither did Robert."
"What is going to happen to Robert and me now?"
The tremor in her voice matched the ones in her hands. as she withdrew from Julie's touch and reached for her husband's arm.
"Ahana, I'm safe and so are you," he told her taking her hand. "I will explain it all to you soon--when you are ready--when the shock of all this wears off."
**********
John and Julie helped the happy couple get settled in their suite and Ahana was given a sedative-- put to bed with instructions to call she needed anything at all.
"We're staying in the hotel too, so don't hesitate to call."
***************
Crawling under the covers they kept softly kissing, bathing sweetly in the comfort of being in each others arms, the unbelievable richness and luxury of it all.
Half asleep, and talking with a slur, Ahana managed a few more words.
"Robert, I cannot believe it is really you, that we are here together. I have missed you so much."
"Me too my darling. Me too."
Before long they were sound asleep and secure in each others arms at last.
Four hours later Robert woke up and went in the bathroom. When he returned he crawled in and once again, pulled the love of his life close to him.
Ahana felt the hardness of a beginning erection against her bottom.
"Oh Robert, I need you so bad, I want you to make love to me but I keep falling asleep with this sedative."
"I want that too love, but go back to sleep, you're going to need your rest, cause we're going to love on each other all weekend long: HAVE A HOT NEW YEAR'S CELEBRATION!
***************
THE END.
