Looking down at her lying there, his heart melted.
Being a physician, he was well acquainted with life and death, but seeing her fall overboard and realizing she could have been lost to him forever made him weak at the knees.
Her eyes opened and she asked, "Who are you? Where am I? What happened?"
"I'm Doc, the guy you tripped over. You are on my boat. You hit your head, and fell overboard. But don't worry, you're safe now."
Angel immediately remembered and was not only relieved, but totally surprised to see Doc again--to be with a good man who cared about her--one who would protect her and keep her safe from Captain.
As Doc held her hand. her shaky body was flooded with feel good endorphins and her headache began to fade.
"Just rest Angel. I'm going to go fix you a snack."
******************
Bringing her a toasted raisin bagel, cherry preserves and hot chocolate, Doc sat down next to her on a matching chaise lounge to visit and catch up on what'd been going on since they'd last talked six weeks ago.
That conversation opened up the subject of his travel plans.
With a map in hand he showed her where they'd be going and what they'd be doing the entire summer.
"My nanny quit yesterday. I have delayed sailing in hopes of finding another one before I leave. Could I interest you in taking her place?"
Assuring her that their relationship would be strictly business, he said he was sorry for what had happened before--that impulsive incident back at her rooming house where things got out of control.
"Look at it this way Angel, that encounter in the bathroom shouldn't have happened, let's not let it interfere now with our logical reasoning."
He went on to explain, that although he wished it were not the case, he was too old for her, that she needed to eventually find a nice young man closer to her own age.
"Angel, I'm old enough to be your father. I admit, at first I was inappropriately attracted to you and it was wrong of me. But it's all worked out for the best. If you will come to work for me as we had originally planned, I guarantee you, our relationship will stay strictly professional."
"Hey Doc, you've made me the best offer I've ever had, I'm okay with what happened between us. Besides, I don't want anymore men in my life, at least as lovers."
**********************
Around midnight, Doc's twins, Mac and Mandy, returned from an all day outing and met Angel for the first time.
It was their eighteenth birthday and they were excited to see their dad. The last time they saw him was Spring Break.
After all the initial hugs and greetings, Doc introduced them to Angel.
When they found out their Dad was going to hire Angel as their nanny, they laughed and scoffed at the idea.
Mac said, "Dad, don't you think that is kind of silly now that Mandy and I are eighteen? Angel can't be more than ten years older than we are."
"Well then, how about if we call her my 'Personal Assistant'? Would that make you happier? But that'll mean if she tells you something, it's the same as if it came from me."
************************
They all sat around for the next hour and chatted. Doc was happy to see his twins hit it off with Angel and vice-versa.
By now Angel was feeling much better, so Doc suggested they all go for a moonlight walk along the pier and get a midnight snack at the Pier Bistro.
Afterwards the four of them end up playing shuffleboard on the nearby courts and then called it a day.
Showing Angel the lush guest quarters on his luxury yacht, he said goodnight and told her how good it was to see her again. Saying good night, he shook her hand and forced himself not kiss her.
***********************
The next day with Doc at her side, Angel called the cafe in Cambridge and told them she wouldn't be returning to work that she'd been made a job offer too good to turn down. One that required her to start right away.
That taken care of, Doc suggested that Monday, they drive into Boston to get her belongings and to apply for a passport at the post office.
When she expressed concerned over packing all the necessities, Doc assured her he would simply buy whatever she needed as they traveled. "I always take care of this for anyone who is part of my crew."
Before they left, Angel ran in to her friend Todd at the Pier Cafe and explained what had happened with Doc the night before, that she was going to start working for him.
"I hope I didn't worry you Todd, I was so out of it, I forgot all about you."
"Margo filled me in on what happened--that you'd nearly drowned--that Doc saved you and you ended up staying on his boat."
"That's good, but how'd you know I was okay?"
"She knows Doc and convinced me, you were as safe as in God's pocket. But I ran a check on him anyway."
Giving her a goodbye hug, Todd said, "I'm so sorry for what happened to you. I should have never left you on her boat with that guy. Captain's a horny old rough-neck when he drinks. I had forgotten that about him."
Then Todd proceeded to tell her that when he and Margo went for their walk, they'd worked things out between them, that once again, they were officially engaged.
Smiling he gave her a kiss on the cheek and a final goodbye. "Have a good life Angel. I'm sure our paths will cross again. All's well that ends well, so they say."
********************
Later in the afternoon, Angel, Doc, and the twins took off on bicycles for a picnic along the seashore.
When they returned, first thing they saw was a woman in a white bikini, big hat and huge sunglasses reading a book on the top deck of Doc's boat. Next to her sat a barking Westie protesting their arrival.
The woman turned out to be Doc's latest girlfriend, Skylar.
He'd first met her six weeks before aboard the Luxury-Limo that transported him between Boston's Hilton and Hilton New York City.
Introducing Angel to Skylar, Doc excused himself to go make some calls, leaving the women alone to visit.
After establishing that Angel was no one that mattered socially, Skylar lost no time in treating her like pond scum.
Over the next few days, despite her airs and acting snooty, Angel held her own remaining polite and cordial.
Doc could not help but notice the contrast between them.
Seeing first hand how intimidating Skylar could be, with a deep sigh, Doc took Angel aside and reassured her.
"Don't be concerned with Skylar's ways, all instructions regarding your work here will come only from me."
**********************
A week later they arrived in NYC where they docked and spent a few days at the Waldorf Astoria.
Angel spent her days with the twins sight seeing and Doc and Skylar spent their time in deep conversation with serious looks on their faces.
On the day they were due to depart Skylar and Doc had a major argument and broke off their relationship. They went back to the yacht where it became obvious they were leaving without Skylar.
Doc didn't bother to explain and nobody asked where she was.
Sensing Doc's sadness, Angel tried hard to do little things she knew he liked to cheer him up, but nothing helped.
Becoming reclusive, he only visited at lunch and avoided outings that included Angel.
*****************
After ten days, Doc pulled out of his gloom and the four of them begin to once again have a good time. So much so, they were often mistaken by strangers as a family.
***************
Erotic dreams about Doc, made Angel realize that despite their having a professional relationship, her attraction to Doc was increasing, not decreasing.
She hid it though, determined to conform to the professional relationship he had established when he hired her.
Constantly she had to remind herself to behave and not tease him by appearing on deck in her swim suit. When he came up in his, she'd discreetly look away.
The huge bulge he packed was just too much and only flamed her smoldering lust for him.
But in time, his lack of response to her as a platonic friend, let alone a woman, made her realize he wasn't the man she thought he was.
In a way she was glad he had revealed his true colors. Better to find out now, she told herself, than later.
With or without him, there wasn't a day or night he failed to be wandering around in her mind somewhere.
Despite all of her philosophical reasoning why she was better off without him, he somehow remained a big pain in her gut.
It hurt to know he no longer wanted her, probably never did, or ever would.
Angel felt like a complete fool. Why, she'd asked herself, did I ever let myself get so attached to him. Will I ever learn?
Often she felt depressed and cried herself to sleep. It made her wonder if she'd been born with a mental handicap, one that made her completely stupid about men.
Determined to toughen up and from now on in, keep her true feelings to herself, she vowed to keep up her guard.
Doc really hadn't done anything deliberately to hurt her, but just the sight of him, made her heart ache.
******************
With only three more weeks left to Labor Day, Doc stayed busy helping the twins to prepare for their first year away at school. Mandy had been accepted at Stanford, and Mac at John Hopkins.
Doc was not only concerned about the twins getting off to college, but also how he could help Angel further her goals and at the same time help himself, Mandy and Mac.
Once all the options were clear in his own head--he asked Angel to meet him on shore for lunch--that he had an idea he wanted to talk to her about.
"Look Angel, how about you coming back with us, working for me part-time while working on your Masters in Philosophy at Harvard?
"Harvard? Really? That sounds wonderful."
"It's a great university and with your background, you shouldn't have any trouble getting in one of the graduate schools--you may even want to eventually consider getting your Ph.d at Harvard Divinity School--that'd look good on the back cover of that "Alternative Games" book you're planning to write."
"Yes, actually, I'd considered that when I left the convent."
"And I'll be happy to help you, if and when that time comes. But for now, I can see YOU being a big help to ME during the school year--then over holidays when the twins come home on break."
"It all sounds wonderful to me Doc. Besides, I have grown fond of Mandy and Mac. They're good kids and fun to be with."
"Thank you. I think it would be good for them to see you, be an on going influence, not only as a friend, but a mentor. Then come next summer, you'd once again be available to travel with us on the boat. "
"Oh Doc, I would just love it. If you want me, I want to do it. Thank you so much!"
******************
Thirty-five days later, Angel found herself living at "The Castle" a beautiful mansion belonging to Doc on historic Tory Row only blocks away from where George Washington himself lived during the American Revolution.
*****************
Once Angel had settled in, it took several weeks for Doc to acquaint her with his home and office.
Somehow he managed to work it in and then ended up giving her free reign to creatively complete projects he had started in the past, but found he never had time to complete.
She caught on so quickly, he couldn't help but pat himself on the back for grabbing her up.
Between school and learning her new job Angel stayed busy every minute, with no time to think about romance anymore.
It seemed good for a change. At last, her life had meaning again, something she'd not had since leaving the convent.
All work and no play agreed just fine with Angel.
******************
At Thanksgiving, Mac and Mandy came home from college and were as delighted to see Angel, as their father.
In the past, it had always been a problem trying to incorporate them into his life being a single father with a far too busy life.
Now he felt he had it made. Almost.
******************
Although Angel helped fill the emptiness in his life, she was a double edged sword.
He had her, but he didn't have her.
There were many a night he sat in his study sipping a brandy and re-living the delicious memory of her.
He'd close his eyes and before drifting off to sleep, he'd curse fate and wonder why he had to be so damn old and her so damn young.
How could he ever forget the night his passion peaked, their one stolen night in the bathroom upstairs at Helga's rooming house? Where they played in the shower, satisfying their bodies best they could, sure that sometime soon they'd fuck for real.
*********************
Angel loved life at Harvard and the first semester had a perfect four point average. Doc couldn't have been prouder of her than if she was his own daughter.
Angel loved all of her classes, but her favorite class was Human Sexuality where the physician/professor would tell the students at the beginning of each class, "Raise your hand if you DIDN'T have sex last night."
There she found herself in a study group with Jamison Schlesinger, a first year Law Student who needed to pick up a few credits in humanities.
Taking a fancy to her and she to him, they would continue talking after a study sessions ended and the other students were all gone.
Angel felt okay about this as Doc had told her that it was okay to invite her group over to the house when it was her turn to host on Thursday nights.
Each time Jameson hung around longer and longer and sometimes even watched a movie with Angel over a shared bowl of popcorn and a pitcher of lemon-aide.
One night they ended up watching a required movie--it turned out to be a "R" rated chic-flick that had more sex in it then either of them had anticipated.
By the time the movie was done, they were both breathing hard and could barely look at each other.
Finally Jamison turned to Angel and said, "Out of curiosity, I see you never raise your hand when the professor asks his big question of the night. Tell me, Do you really have sex before every class?"
"Laughing she said, "No, I just don't have the courage to raise my hand to say I don't. It's too embarrassing. But I think that's the point he's trying to make. How hung up we all are about sex."
"Yeah, I think your right Angel. Take me for example. If you look down, you can see I have a massive hard right now and I'd be willing to bet that you're panties are good and wet, yet you and I sit here like zombies and do nothing about it."
"We . . . we . . . we could change that Jamie . . . ."
With no hesitation, Jamie unzipped his pants and flipped out the best looking cock she'd ever recalled seeing. It was big around and hard as a rock, long and dripping pre-cum from the tip.
"See what I mean Angel. How needy it is right now," he said shaking it in her direction.
"Oh my God yes," she said the aching between her legs turning to a pulsating throb."
She didn't want to be responding like this, but she couldn't help herself as she reached over and began stroking it, first slowly and the picking up the speed as he moaned and put his hand under her skirt pulling aside her sopping wet panties.
"I want to fuck you so bad Angel. Fuck me and let's get this over with," he growled pushing her skirt up around her waist.
Reaching for his wallet to take out a condom he was startled by the overhead lights going on.
Angel and Jamie looked towards the door and saw it was wide open.
Doc was standing there frozen, staring at them in disbelief until he lashed out.
"What the hell do you think you are doing in here? This my home, not your LOVE SHACK!"
Angel was mortified and wanted to die as she pulled her skirt down and sat up.
Embarrassed, Jamison covered his still erect dick with his long shirt tails, grabbed his jacket, and books and rushed for the back door.
"I'm sorry," he whinned as he exited.
Doc knew he had no right, but he was furious. Jealous in a way he'd never been in his entire life.
