Love On The Wood Pile
Helga's Great-Grandfather Otto Z. Peterson rented 112 First Street from the Holker's in Duluth, Minnesota. The large commercial building they rented was where Otto ran the Duluth Paint & Body Shop.

Parked right next to 112 was an eighteen foot house trailer where he and his wife Hilda spent the winter months before returning to summer at "Lake Gitche Gumee Retreat" on North Shore Scenic Drive.

Next door on a large corner lot sat 116 First Street. It was a large family home also owned by the Holkers. They rented it to James Z. Hill, a lay minister who was a mechanic during the week. He had a good reputation for honesty and always keeping his word.

One important promise he forgot to keep was when he unintentionally let down Helga's great-grandparents.

James had promised Otto that if he heard anything at all about his landlords planing to sell 116 he would tell him immediately.

Otto felt confident that he'd do it, until one day he heard a rumor that the Hill's were moving out.

Thanks to a last minute intervention by Great-Grandpa and Mr. Hill, the pending sale was stopped by Mr. Holker and Helga's great-grandparents ended up buying the 1800's ram-shackled house at 116 for $700.00 (the exact amount bequeathed to Otto from his father who had died earlier in the year).

Soon after Helga's grandparents mortgaged it for $4,000. in order to modernize and build a big shop out back for their business.

The mortgage payments were $25.31 a month for 20 years with the First Bank of Duluth which was located a stones throw away at their downtown location.

As low as that seems now, back then those payments weren't always easy to come by, especially in the winter when the only real security was a few ton of coal, 20 cords of firewood, canned goods, ground coffee, and barrels of potatoes, apples, vinegar and two kinds of ciders plus a supply of Bull Durham Tobacco for Great-Grandpa to "roll his own" cigarettes. (He used his own saliva to seal them shut saying it wasn't the tobacco that would kill you it was the glue on papers of those "ready mades" that was the problem.) Of course there was always seed for next years garden stored in Gerber
Baby Food jars - their lids nailed to the underside of the cellar stair steps for easy screwing and unscrewing.

Down there on rough lumber shelves and along the stairs were Ball Canning Jars filled mostly with fruits and vegetables. Hundreds of jars stood there every fall as a tribute to Great-Grandma's hard efforts.

It wasn't only the canning they represented, it was the work behind every jar, the picking of all the fruits and vegetables, the mess and lingering odors from the smelt runs (1) that were replaced in autumn by the sweet aroma of cider being made precisely on the very spot where tubs of smelt had been in the spring.

Grandma's larder (2) consisted of honey, real maple syrup, peaches, pears, applesauce, raspberries, blackberry jam, rhubarb, tomatoes, green-beans,kidney beans, peppers, navy beans, corn, beets, sauerkraut, fish, roast beef, sweet relish, wild horseradish, rutabagas, green beans, peas, tomato sauce, chili sauce, pickles, and green peppers along with a stash of store bought pop corn, sugars, salt, spices, cocoa, coffee, chocolate chips, raisins, dried prunes, elbow macaroni and Kraft Dinner. Oatmeal, flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and yeast for making bread and biscuits was always in good supply and kept tightly sealed. (Baking Soda and Morton's Iodized Salt were used as tooth paste as well as for cooking so there was always extra of that on hand.)

In the kitchen near the old Hoosier Cabinet hung strings of Wild Morel Mushrooms drying for use throughout the year and were the family favorite. Puff Balls and Beef Steak Mushrooms were consumed only when fresh and with extreme caution.

The old oak barrels at the bottom of the stairs held apples, potatoes, carrots, onions, vinegar, and homemade apple cider, the regular kind and "hard" as well. The hard cider was made by adding "mother" to the barrel. It looked like slimy brown paper and it would multiply in the barrel as it fermented the cider. According to Great-Grandpa it was a treasured gift usually given by a friend from his own barrel of hard cider and was a sign of true friendship and good will.

In exchange for car repair and maintenance, a local drugstore gave the Peterson's: Canadian Whiskey, Bag Balm, Absorbine Junior, Black Drawing Salve, Epson Salt, Pinkhams Iodine, Red-Cross Rubbing Alcohol, Bayer Aspirin, Boric Acid, Pepto Bismo, Ben Gay, Listerine, Vaseline, Preparation H, Cod Liver Oil, Johnson Band-Aids and Park's Multi-vitamins. Mineral water in a near-bye flowing well and was available for free.

Iron in their diet came from eating store bought beef liver once a week. Vitamin A and protein came from eggs. For Vitamin C friends in Florida would send grapefruit and oranges via freight trains that stopped daily along side their downtown business.

All citrus fruit came in big wooden "orange-crates".

Great-Grandpa would sometimes warn Helga:

"If you don't take of your nice things you'll be living on
those orange crates, imagine a whole house furnished with nothing but orange crates. That's how some people live you know."

Nevertheless Helga was thrilled to get a two shelved
orange crate, combine it with another and nail a board
on top where she would thumb-tack all around the edge, a floor length frilly skirt. It was more precious to her at the time than the antiques that furnished her room.

She learned right then that people tend to value
that which they create themselves over all else.

****************

In the winter Otto took his fish shanty out on the bay to catch various fresh water fish. He would also hunt for bear, porcupine, raccoon, deer and wild rabbit. For poultry, they got chickens from the local grocery
store and shot pheasant. Passenger Pigeons as a cheap food source was not an option as it was for their parents. By 1914 the bird had become totally extinct after being the most populous bird in North America. (3)

For refrigeration, big blocks of ice were cut out of Lake Superior with two man saws and kept frozen in piles of sawdust at the local meat locker. All summer long he came into the Peterson home once a week and deposited a big block of ice in the icebox or wherever they requested. People were always happy to see him and would clamor around the truck for slivers of ice on a hot summer days. (Perhaps this was an early version of the "Snow-Cone" minus the flavoring.) Ice picks and ice tongs were considered household necessities.

Most people still used "iceboxes" and did not own a refrigerator leave alone a freezer. Like the egg woman,
the coffee man, the bread man, and the milk man,
the iceman delivered. Today about the only thing
that gets delivered to you is is pizza.

When milk and butter became expensive luxuries, Helga's Great-Grandparents made due with Oleo
Margarine which had to be mixed in a squeeze bag
with food coloring so it would be yellow rather than
white - didn't change the taste but made it look better.

Helga hated having to mix anything, especially the milk for her cereal. When times where tough Great-Grandma bought powdered milk and also condensed canned milk such as Carnations or Pet Milk.

Every year Helga's great-grandparents bought a pig from a farmer. Once the local slaughter house butchered the pig, it was preserved by "smoking" and then hung in quarters on a hooks from the ceiling in the "cold room". The pig hocks and feet were pickled.

Soon after the quartered pig was delivered Great-Grandma would make up batches of soap to last for a year. Helga called it "pig liquid". It was rendered pork tallow mixed with lye. The mixture was poured hot into a sectioned off wooden box. The finished product resembled bars of Fels Naphtha Soap. (4)

Instead of using store bought detergent, Grandma would shave some of this into flakes that she would use to wash clothes in her electric Maytag Ringer-Washer. Afterwords she'd occasionally use it to churn a big batch of butter.

Even by age eighteen, Helga still had not learned how to do the family laundry. Great-Grandmother was afraid that she would get a 'body part" caught in the wringer.

Back in those days rumors of women "getting a tit caught in the wringer" were often whispered woman to woman in hushed tones. Helga didn't worry as she never planned on washing clothes anyway. She had even announced:

"When I grow up I'm going to marry a prince and who ever heard of a princess washing clothes?"

Whenever Helga had to help throw slabs of wood down the coal shoot, clean up messes in the kitchen from canning, pick produce, or do any of the "prepare for winter" chores, Great-Grandpa would shake his head, slightly grind his teeth, and warn her:

"Another long hard cold winter is coming, and we'd
better be ready for it."

Sometimes if company were present, he'd add:

"It takes ten bushels of potatoes every winter just to feed our Helga here...."

That always made her feel proud to be the family's biggest and best "eater". She'd swell up even bigger yet, when her great-grandparents bragged about how Helga ALWAYS cleaned up her plate. One thing for certain nobody had to tell her that "the children in Europe were starving." (5)

**********************

Twenty years later standing in the door way of Great-Grandpa's decrepit shop, Helga felt transported back in time to the magical summers she had spent working in the family body shop.

It was as if she could still hear the shop's Montgomery Ward's Airline radio blaring out all the inane silliness of "Bob & Ray" and the seriousness of Ernie Holwell's familiar voice announcing another Detroit Tigers Baseball Game". (6)

Helga thought about her childhood as she realized how simple it was now to reach over and take a jar of blackberry jam off the high shelf where three decades earlier she regularly fell down the cellar stairs from over extending her reach. Helga dusted the jar off and wondered if all of the canned goods were spoiled.

*****************

Suddenly she heard a noise behind her and turned to see her high school sweetheart making his way down into the old the dirt cellar.

Helga squealed in delight and with her arms outstretched she made her way through the dirt and debris saying:

"Oh Johnny! It is so good to see you. I was hoping you might stop over in time for the sale. Are you in town for long?"

John smiled upon hearing her call him Johnny. Nobody had done that in a long time. He looked at Helga with longing in his eyes and replied:

"Actually I'm here for the rest of the summer staying at Camp Gitche Gumee - I'm the activity director."

Listening and looking up at him Helga had the urge to hold him tight and never let him go, but instead she smiled and said:

"It's been a long time. How great it is to see you again.
I often think of our times down here stacking wood together and getting up there on the top of the wood pile when we...."

John's cock immediately stood at attention as he
recalled the two of them on prom night laying top of a triple wide stack of firewood muffling their cries of ecstasy so Great-Grandma wouldn't hear them through furnace pipes.

It was all he could do not to grab Helga - ravage her -fuck her right up on top of that wood pile again like he did so long ago.

Instead he held his gym bag in front of himself and
mustered up words of condolences:

"it's good to see you Helga. I had heard Hilda and Otto died that you were coming back to put things in order. It's gotta be hard on you kid. I was sorry to hear the news. Your great-grandparents were good people for sure. So when are you going back to the big city? "

Helga told John she'd taken a leave of absence and would be staying for as long as it took to wrap everything up she planned to stay in the house until it sold that she needed time to work with the appraisers to determine prices.

John interrupted her "to do" list and said:

"Helga, slow down girl. It sounds to me like you got
plenty of time to get it all done. Tonight let me take
you out to dinner at our favorite old spot. You
can relax and we can catch up on old times. What do you say? I'll be back here at 7PM to pick you up and I won't take no for an answer!"

*****************

It was 4PM as Helga watched Johnny pull out of the driveway. She hurried back down to the cellar intent upon cleaning up the area around the back wall where the wood was still stacked three chords deep. Just for the hell of it she climbed up to the spot where she and
Johnny "did it" for the first time.

Sitting up there with the cellar window open feeling the cool breezes off the bay was intoxicating. On a whim she jumped back down, went upstairs and collected some fresh bedding from Great-Grandma's old round topped trunk. She could hear Great-Grandpa saying:

"Helga, you know why that top is rounded don't you? It's to let the rain and snow fall off instead of accumulating. Thought you'd want to know that."

Helga talked back to the voice in her head:

"Not now Gramps, I have something I must do. Tomorrow we'll talk!"

********************

With bedding in hand Helga found her overnight bag with her vibrator-dildo.

Arms full she managed to get it all back down to the cellar where by removing slabs of wood she managed
to carve a bed into the woodpile.

She lined it with two feather tick mattresses and
a fresh duvet cover. Stacking the pillows up in back she tried it out for size. It was all she could do not to get naked and turn that vibrator on and go for it.

Her womanhood was still throbbing from seeing Johnny earlier. She dozed off a for a few minutes and then noting the time, realized she must hurry to get ready for her first date in years.

Laughing at herself for recreating Johnny's and her virginal bed in the cellar, she set about trying to make herself look as sexy as possible.

She stood looking in the mirror at herself in her bright red lacy bra and matching bikini briefs. Finding her own reflection to be arousing, she laughed and said:

"This has GOT to be the height of something!"

Yet at the same time she felt grateful to feel sexy and beautiful.

Helga had been a widow for two years. She never until this moment felt ready to move on. Today she was feeling happy and sexually alive once more.

*****************

Promptly at 7PM Johnny pulled in the driveway and Helga ran out to meet him. The minute he smiled and reached across the seat to give her a hello kiss she
knew she was where she belonged.

They ended up at the Lake Gitcheee-Gumie Bed And Breakfast for dinner. Both Helga and Johnny were happy to find the B&B had dancing and a piano bar. It's reputation for serving fine gourmet meals had certainly not been exaggerated. They sang and danced and
hugged all the way to closing time.

****************

As Johnny took Helga back to her Great-Grandparents he didn't have much to say and neither did she. Finally he broke the silence and said:

"Helga, I haven't had so much fun in years. Promise me
you will do this again with me next weekend, or I won't
let you out of the car."

Helga laughed and said:

"No problem Johnny, I would love to. Same time?"

Before he could answer they heard a loud crashing noise coming from the cellar. Helga about lost it and Johnny grabbed his gun from the glove compartment saying:

"You stay here Helga, I will check it out."

Helga panicked saying:

"I'm scarred to stay here, let me come with you. Don't
you have your cell phone on you."

Johnny looked surprised and said:

"No, I must have left it in the restaurant . Where is yours?"

"Down in the dirt cellar on top of the wood pile where
we.... you know......."

Despite the panicky situation Johnny started laughing and said,

"Look Helga, this is no time to give me a hard on!" Come on, follow behind me and I'll check it out."

They cautiously searched the garage and then the house room by room finding nothing. Finally they entered the cellar and began looking around when they saw two raccoons in the coal bin with a box of broken china. Frightened the coons ran and escaped through an opening in the crumbling stone foundation.

Helga and Johnny laughed and held each other tight and then started looking for her cell. They found it where Helga had made the bed earlier in the wood pile.

Johnny started laughing and said:

"What the hell is this Helga? A love nest?

He bright forth her vibrator and her cell phone saying:

"Where you expecting someone tonight?"

Feeling embarrassed Helga shyly said:

"No, I was just being silly after you left today, reliving old times......."

Johnny kissed Helga hard and started feeling her up and then he lifted her up to the top of the woodpile.

Spreading her legs he buried his head into her delicious sweetness he had never forgotten.

Grabbing her ankles he kissed his way up to her navel until she pushed his head down to her pulsating puffy vagina where he fucked her with his thick fat tongue until she cried out so loud he was afraid the neighbors across the street would call the cops.

Johnny joined Helga at the top of the wood pile and lay on her while he removed every last piece of clothing except for her crotchless white panties.

He worked through these by sliding his rock hard dick into the opening and fucking her fast and hard.

Afraid he was going to cum, he flipped Helga on top and had her ride his big hard dick. It felt so good he couldn't help himself from thrusting upward into
her cunt faster and faster until she started screaming:

"I'm cumming, I'm cumming, yes, oh yes. Make it last!"

Within seconds they heard a loud bull horn outside the cellar window saying:

"This is officer Flanagan we were just driving by. Are you okay in there Helga?"

Helga regained her senses and hollered back:

"Everything is fine now officer. Raccoons got in and broke a big box of dishes. It scarred the hell out of me. Good news though, they ran outdoors and every-thing's okay now."

Office Flanagan left and with Johnny's cock still inside her she once again began to ride it up and down as Johnny bit at her big tits every-time she lowered herself down upon him. As the intensity increased she started squeezing his throbbing manhood with her strong vaginal muscles. He reached down and dipped his fingers into her dripping hot juices and licked them saying:

"My God Helga you taste even sweeter than you did years ago, I have never tasted or smelled anything so
Delicious.... hang in there with me baby.......I"m gonna make you come....I'm going to explode deep within you.... but before I do, you must promise to give us time. Promise to spend all this summer with me. I want it to be our our time...."

Helga was beside herself. She would have promised him anything just to climax and go over that mountain but she knew deep in her heart that she wanted what he did too.

As he began thrusting his manhood in and out keeping pace with her movements her intensity increased and Helga could not contain herself. In total euphoria she confessed:

" Oh Johnny, I love you so, I have never stopped loving you. I need you baby, I need you. It has been years for me.......oh Johnny baby finish me off.......finish me off baby......OMG....... You are so good at this...... So good......yeah like that baby....just like that......are you with me Johnny....Oh come with me baby just like we did so long ago......."

Johnny knew he was falling over the edge going where no return was possible; he was cresting and he knew it. He yelled out:

"I'm cumming Baby, I'm cumming. Ain't no use
no more....not a double negative Baby....a double positive.......Cum with me ......Cum with me.......OMG......OMG.......OMG...Stay with me Baby!"

Helga climaxed so hard part of the wood pile came tumbling down from under her. Johnny kept her from falling and then carried her up two flights of stairs to her old trundle bed. Half asleep she cuddled up to Johnny and soon drifted into a peaceful sleep. All night long his head remained upon her tummy as if it were his own special pillow.

Before the sun came up he kissed Helga goodbye and made his way back to the camp to resume his duties.

Helga and Johnny made love all summer long - come fall they booked the Honeymoon Suite of the Gitche-Gumie Bed & Breakfast on Lake Superior where they stood on the shore and repeated their sacred vows.

The End

Footnotes:

(1) Smelt and Smelt Run
The smelt run in Lake Superior usually takes place during the last two weeks of April. The runs are not large making it difficult to hit the short peak of the run, especially if you are not local to the area. The timing of the run typically peaks just after the ice leaves the bay. Typically, the run is seen first in the Hot Pond on the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay. "Smelt dipping" is a common group sport in the early spring months (generally late April in the Upper Peninsula, when the stream water reaches approximately C, 40-42f). Fish are spotted using a flashlight / headlamp. They are scooped out of the water using a dip net made of nylon or metal mesh. The smelt are cleaned by removing the head and the entrails. Fins, scales, and bones of all but the largest of smelts are cooked without removal. Source: Wiki

(2) Larder

A larder is a cool area for storing food prior to use. Larders were commonplace in houses before the widespread use of the refrigerator. Many larders have small unglazed windows with the window opening covered in fine mesh. This allows free circulation of air without allowing flies to enter. Many larders have tiled or painted walls to simplify cleaning. Older larders and especially those in larger houses have hooks in the ceiling to hang joints of meat or game. Others have insulated containers for ice, anticipating the future development of refrigerators. A buttery was usually called the cellar by this stage. Source: Wiki

(3) Passenger Pigeons
The passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) or wild pigeon was a species of pigeon that was once the most common bird in North America. It lived in enormous flocks. During migration, flocks could be 1 mile (1.6 km) wide and 300 miles (500 km) long, taking several hours to pass and sometimes containing more than two billion birds. Some estimate that there were three billion to five billion passenger pigeons in the United States when Europeans arrived in North America. Others argue that the species had not been common in the Pre-Columbian period, but their numbers grew when devastation of the American Indian population by European diseases led to reduced competition for food. During the 19th century, the species went from being one of the most abundant birds in the world to extinction. At the time, passenger pigeons had one of the largest groups or flocks of any animal, second only to the Rocky Mountain locust. Sources: a. Wiki

(4) Fels-Naptha is a very old brand of bar laundry soap used for pre-treating stains on clothing and as a home remedy for exposure to poison ivy and other skin-irritants. Fels-Naptha was originally manufactured by the Armor Company but is now a trademark of the Dial Corporation. The soap comes packaged in paper similar to bar body soap and is most often found in the laundry section of a supermarket or grocery store. It is used in the pre-treatment of stains by rubbing the dampened product on a soiled area prior to laundering, and is claimed by the manufacturer to be most effective in removing chocolate, baby formula, perspiration, and make-up. Fels-Naptha is also used as a home remedy in the treatment of contact dermatitis caused by exposure to poison ivy, poison oak, and other oil-transmitted organic skin-irritants. Washing the skin directly with the soap helps break up the oils that carry the toxin. Grated and added to a wash cycle, about 1/16 a bar's worth the Fels-Naptha per load, will eliminate residual resins that can remain in clothes up to a year according to the manufacturer. It should not be used as an overall body soap or regular laundry additive since it contains Stoddard solvent, a skin and eye irritant.

(5) After both World Wars, it was common for parents to say this to their children who didn't want to "clean up their plates". It was to remind them that in war torn zones there was not enough food and that children were starving and should be grateful for the food they have on their plates not waste it. The purpose was to inspire a grateful attitude and a little guilt at the same time as a motivator to eat everything on their plates.

(6) Ernie Harwell: Announcer/Detroit Tigers
William Earnest "Ernie" Harwell (born January 25, 1918 in Washington, Georgia) is a former American sportscaster, known for his long career calling play-by-play of Major League Baseball games. For 55 years, 42 of them with the Detroit Tigers, Harwell called balls, strikes, and home runs on radio and television. In January 2009, the American Sportscasters Association ranked Harwell 16th on its list of Top 50 Sportscasters of All Time.

"Bob and Ray". Bob Elliott (born 1923) and Ray Goulding (1922-1990) were an American comedy team whose career spanned five decades. Their format was typically to satirize the medium in which they were performing, such as conducting radio or television interviews, with off-the-wall dialogue presented in a generally deadpan style as though it were a serious interview. Elliott and Goulding began as disc jockeys in Boston with their own separate programs on station WHDH-AM, and each would visit with the other while on the air. Their informal banter was so appealing that WHDH would call on them, as a team, to fill in when Red Sox baseball broadcasts were rained out. Elliott and Goulding (not yet known as Bob and Ray) would improvise comedy routines all afternoon, and joke around with studio musicians. Elliott and Goulding's brand of humor caught on, and WHDH gave them their own weekday show in 1946. Matinee with Bob and Ray was originally a 15-minute show, soon expanding to half an hour. This is why Elliott and Goulding became known as Bob and Ray. Ray Goulding said that Matinee with Bob and Ray sounded better than Matinob with Ray and Bob.
