Does your body send you messages when it is time for something? Do you get a sort of ache inside? Mine does, and as a professional driver it can happen at some very inopportune times. As my work is often time constrained there is no way I can stop to remedy the situation. Nevertheless driving while distracted, or without both hands on the wheel is not a good idea if you are likely to be observed. There is the chance of causing an accident, or getting a ticket from the constabulary, or both.
Today I got that familiar feeling. I ignored it for as long as I could, but finally thought I'd chance it. I was on a good, but deserted, country road, and getting very uncomfortable. Having to struggle, one handed, with a zipper, while still concentrating on the road is not easy. The material moves instead of the fastener, so no matter how I tugged I could only move it a little. I tried jerking it at a different angle and managed to move it enough to get my hand inside.
Finding what I was looking for was the easy part, there was nothing else in there that was six or seven inches long, more than an inch thick, and stiff. Getting it out was the problem! Because the zipper was half closed it would not come out sideways, and although it was not as hard as I had at first imagined, I was having great difficulties. Also when driving something that is 14ft high, over 25ft long, and has an all up weight of 18tons, you constantly need the use of both hands.
After almost getting it out several times, I came to a long straight section of road. I had been tugging only gently as I didn't want to have to clear up any mess, but even so it was softer than before, much less enticing. Finally I managed to maneuver it so that the end was poking out, grabbed it and eased it out. Oh no, I thought. If there is one thing I can't stand, its an over-ripe banana! And I must get something easier to keep my lunch in than this old sports bag.
