If this WAS a national disaster, stuck in a New York City Subway was not where I wanted to be.
I only knew for sure that I wanted out of the art museum and all its blackness, away from not knowing where we were at or what was happening.
As he opened the entrance door to the subway I was relieved to see it was lit. Whether this was emergency lighting or not, I couldn't care less, it was light, and far more than what we had in museum which was almost nothing except for its lit emergency signs.
We exited and walked along the tracks. At first we heard nothing, but after 10 minutes or so we heard a siren somewhere in the distance above us. At the same time we saw a big red door that said "EMERGENCY".
The door opened up in to a long corridor that led us directly into to the lowest level of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel where we found the elevators had "Closed For Maintenance" signs. To our surprise a short distance away there was an working escalator that took us up to the main level.
Walking into the lobby level we looked around and saw that everything looked normal. I asked Jason,
"What the hell's going on!"
He said,
"I don't know. Let's just see if we can get into our room."
Not knowing what else to do, I followed his quick pace to the check in counter and heard him say:
"Reservations for Jason, Peters and Smith Company?"
The hotel associate signed us in and gave us our room keys; we walked over to the elevators and watched guests getting on and off calmly. Unlike the museum, everything seemed normal.
Even if it was an illusion, it was comforting, especially after all we had been through in the last couple of hours. We were both feeling we needed a safe place to land and stay put.
Getting off on the 15th floor we found our room number and went in to find everything as we had expected except for a bouquet of fresh flowers compliments of Housekeeping. There was nothing about the room or on the television that suggested we could be in the midst of a national emergency.
Without even taking time to break the seal on the toilet seat, I asked Jason if he would call the front desk and see if they would change our floor to the 10th.
He asked why I wanted to do this and I explained that I had heard that below the 10th floor "NYC Fire Fighters" could rescue us, but higher than that it was considered more difficult.
Nodding he picked up the phone and called the front desk. It was no problem, the clerk said they would be happy to accommodate us as most guests preferred the 15th. floor and it would not be difficult to fill our room.
With much anxiety I told Jason,
"Let me stay here until you know we have secured the room on the 10th floor, then call me and I will bring our luggage right down on the cart."
With a slight sigh Jason smiled and agreed,
"Okay, if this is the way we gotta check out of this crazy old world, I'm willing to go along with whatever you want. Just promise me you will meet me on the tenth floor and make love to me tonight!"
Giving him a big hug I replied,
"Oh Jason, of course! No worry there, especially now. I know for sure that is what I want, in fact more than ever. Don't' worry Darling, we're on the same page. If I am going to have one last night of romance I want it to be with you...."
